Samenvatting

This book provides a radical reappraisal of current thinking about leisure. In the first part of the book, the 'conventional wisdom' of leisure analysis is discussed and criticised for its suppression of history and its evasion of theory. The second part argues that the dominant features of contemporary leisure - its domination by the market and the state, persistent inequalities and the drift towards post-industrialism - demonstrate how leisure has become an integral part of the structure of capitalist society. The conclusion argues the need for a complete reappraisal of the 'leisure problem' by practitioners, academics and political activists.
