This supplement includes three papers. In the first paper, Michael Collins presents his personal view of the recent history of strategic planning at regional levels and the often tenuous relationships between these regional strategies and the national plan. In the second paper, Bruce Carrington and Oliver Leaman identify a consistent theme of sport and physical recreation as 'a medium for social work and social control' running through various policy initiatives and recommendations from Wolfenden in 1960 to 1982's Sport in the Community... the next ten years. In the third paper, the writer tried to think about sport in a more speculative manner, again drawing on historical material in part, in order to question some of the notions about the very nature of sports which may or may not be appropiate for promotion and investment in the last decades of the 20th century.Literatuurverwijzing: Collins, M.F., Carrington, B., Leaman, O., & Haywood, L.
